Raymond Davis, A Terrorist or A Diplomat??

On Jan 26, and American National Raymond Davis shot dead two Pakistani citizens in the city of Lahore, he called for help and the car came to flee him, over ran a pedestrian, all this drama  lead  to the death of three Pakistani citizens and the arrest of an American national.

Why Raymond Davis shot those two citizens in unknown, he claimed that it was a self defense and those two men were trying to rob him, but as the investigation has been proceeded, it has become evident that it was not self defense, as the victims got shot at the back and one was almost 20 meters ahead of the suspect, and there were no sign that they tried to rob Davis, so for now everything is going against Davis.

Raymond Davis case is still in trial, and Pakistan government has said that the matter would be decided in court and justice would be served, but strangely and shamefully, USA is forcing Pakistan government to release this criminal, as he is a diplomat and is immune under diplomatic immunity. This demand of USA is irrational and it arises many questions.

The investigation revealed that the bullets Davis fired are forbidden as they come in the category of biological weapons, why Davis was carrying such a dangerous weapon rather than gun with normal bullets that people keep for self defense? And why is America putting so much pressure on Pakistan to release Davis?

The rational thing that comes to mind is that Raymond Davis is an agent on some special mission, but if he is an agent than why he revealed himself by shooting two people at the middle of day? It is still a mystery. Davis was driving a private rental car, had an unlicensed weapon, a telescope and some confidential pictures related to Pakistani government, all these things revealed that Davis is an agent as was deployed to Pakistan on some special mission. That is why USA is so keen on bringing Davis back to USA as soon as possible so that Pakistani officials should not discover some more critical stuff about Davis and his mission.

USA is claiming that Davis is a Diplomat and is relieved under The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), but it is just absurd. The immunity granted before in injury and death cases, were the cases when the Diplomats killed someone in a car accident and all of them were drunk driving, so those deaths were accidental and unintentional. The case of Raymond Davis is different and the “grave offenses” does not hold immunity under any international or local law. Davis intentionally killed two people in the middle of the day and had enough conscious to take pictures of dead bodies with his cell phone and call for help. The driver who over ran a motorcyclist may be granted diplomatic immunity as it was car accident and unintentional, and disgracefully, he hasn’t been presented before the law.

Pakistani government has done the right thing and has shown some guts by not giving Davis back to America before trial. Pakistani government has stated that the courts will decide the matter and justice would be served, and this right and rational thing to do in this situation.

It is not the question that weather he is a diplomat or not, the question is that why he did such a crime, he does not deserve any immunity for such a crime even if he is a diplomat. Because no one is allowed to shoot people in the middle of day, and says that he/she is above the law therefore nobody can do anything about it.

The reaction of USA in this entire situation is shameful and disrespectful; not only America is supporting this criminal but giving threats to Pakistan that if Pakistan is to punish Davis in criminal offense then USA is to stop all aids to Pakistan and discontinue the relations. America is not only supporting this criminal but protecting it, this shows the reality of USA to the whole world that America is spreading violence and terrorism, and is disrespecting the citizens of other countries.

Davis should be given severe punishment, to make it a symbol that no one is above the law, and USA should apologize to whole world in supporting a criminal. This also showed that Pakistani nation has right perception of America that it is real terrorists. As this act of Raymond Davis is a clear act of terrorism. This is the time for Pakistan to stand up and shows the world that every Pakistani citizen is valuable and no one is above the law of this country.
